Dealing with employees who aren't meeting standards... anyone else?

I’m an employer and things have been rough. Had some employees not meeting basic standards, and it ended up costing me $60,000 in refunds to clients. Feels like I’m going under because of it. Anyone else had similar issues?

Wow, that sounds tough. Were these issues with them being unreliable, or was it more about them just not showing up?

I think OP mentioned some of them came back late from breaks or had other issues. Sounds like they weren’t too professional.

@Tenny
Yeah, they’d come back from lunch late and didn’t seem to care about doing the job right.

Did you have any sort of written agreements or policies for them? Sometimes that makes a difference if you need to take action.

Not really, just verbal instructions and schedules. Looking back, should’ve had something written.

Yeah, having a written policy can save you a lot of trouble down the line.

Sounds like a rough spot. Maybe look into what your options are legally to recover some of those losses?

I’ve been thinking about it. Not sure where to start with that though.

If they’re showing up smelling like weed, that’s a huge red flag. Could definitely be grounds to take action.

For sure. Showing up in that condition is just disrespectful to the job.

@Bay
Exactly, felt like they didn’t respect the job or the clients.

Might be good to talk to a lawyer who knows about employment issues. They can tell you if there’s a way to recover anything.

Yeah, I’m considering that. Need to find one who handles these types of cases in Massachusetts.
