Defamation and retaliation at work... what are my options?

I’m dealing with a situation involving defamation and retaliation at my workplace. A temporary para in my classroom, who was friends with the previous teacher, spread a rumor that I was speaking inappropriately to him and in front of a student. Somehow, the student’s parent found out and filed a complaint, but I wasn’t informed about it until several months later.

I spoke to the assistant superintendent and my union rep, and they said they’d investigate. They also talked to the other three paras who were present during the time of the alleged incident. Since then, I haven’t heard anything else from them—no follow-ups or updates. All I’ve received is a copy of the original complaint.

What’s worse is that I haven’t been offered any position since this happened. It feels like retaliation, and I’m not sure what to do next. Shouldn’t they have kept me in the loop during the investigation? What are my rights in this situation?

That’s so frustrating. They’re supposed to communicate with you about the investigation. Have you tried reaching out for an update?

I’ve tried asking, but I’ve been met with silence. It’s really disheartening.

You might want to send a formal letter requesting an update. That could get their attention.

Not being offered any position does sound like retaliation. Did they give you any reason for it?

No, they haven’t provided any explanation. It feels like they’re punishing me without cause.

That’s unacceptable. Retaliation for something like this might even be illegal.

Have you considered filing a formal grievance? They might be obligated to respond if you escalate it.

I haven’t filed one yet, but I’m starting to think that might be the next step.

You should. It puts more pressure on them to follow through and communicate with you.

Rumors like this can seriously harm your career. Have you thought about consulting a lawyer?

I’ve thought about it, but I wasn’t sure if I had enough evidence to take that step.

A lawyer could help you figure out your options. Defamation and retaliation cases can be complex, but you shouldn’t have to handle this alone.

Make sure to document everything—emails, meetings, and even the lack of communication. It could be important later.

Good advice. I’ll start keeping a detailed record of everything from now on.

Also, ask for any updates in writing. That way, you’ll have proof if they continue to ignore you.
