Do I have rights as an older sibling?

I live in a different state than my half-siblings, who are both under 8. Our father passed away a couple of years ago, and their mother is absent due to her issues. The state took them in and placed them with our grandparents, but I’m worried about their well-being. My grandparents are in their 70s and trying to raise young kids, which feels overwhelming. I want to know if I have any rights or options to help my siblings. I have a stable home and want to provide them with a loving environment. Any advice?

I get your concerns about your grandparents raising them at their age. You should definitely reach out to social services in their state and express your willingness to take care of them. Good luck!

Thanks! I’ll look into contacting social services. It’s just tough to know what to do.

You might find yourself stepping in as a backup parent if the grandparents need help. It sounds like you’re really committed to these kids, so don’t hesitate to make your voice heard!

You should definitely talk to their caseworker about your situation. It’s important for them to know you’re interested in the kids’ well-being.

I didn’t think of that! I’ll reach out to them soon.

If you can show that your grandparents might not be able to care for them long-term, you have a better shot at custody. Just make sure to get a family attorney who knows the law.

That makes sense. I’ll definitely consider hiring a lawyer.

It’s great that you have a stable home to offer. Just make sure to present yourself as a viable option to social services. You’ve got this!
