Do I need a permit to take the written and drive test in Oklahoma?

I’m over 18 and haven’t gotten my license yet. Do I need a permit to take the written and drive test in Oklahoma? Also, how long after passing the test can I drive on my own?

Hey! I looked this up a while ago. In Oklahoma, you don’t need a learner’s permit if you’re over 18. You can take the test without one. But if you do want a permit for practice, you’ll have to hold it for 30 days first.

@Stephany
Thanks for the info! So, I can take the written and drive test anytime once I’m ready, right?

Yep, you just need to schedule your written test first. Once you pass the driving test, you can drive on your own immediately. No waiting period for that part.

Sweet, that’s exactly what I needed to know. Thanks!

I just went through this process too! You can take both tests the same day, but it depends on if they have slots available for the driving test. I’d suggest not counting on it though.

Good to know! I’ll plan for separate days just in case. Thanks for the heads-up!

Same here! I was able to get everything done in one go, but it was a bit tight on time. So, don’t be surprised if you need to schedule another appointment.

Yeah, I figured that might happen. I’ll be prepared for that.

Just a quick tip: when you schedule, make sure you have your birth certificate and ID ready, or they might turn you away. It’s easy to forget the small stuff!

Thanks for the reminder! I’m still waiting on my birth certificate to come in the mail, so that’s a good heads-up.
