i filed for bankruptcy in 2010, and it was discharged in 2015. when i applied for a mortgage loan in 2021, i didn’t think i had to disclose my bankruptcy since it was discharged years ago. now i’m filling out a HELOC request with the same bank, and i’ve learned i should have disclosed it. i’m not sure how to handle this, especially since it wasn’t on my credit report and i work for the bank. anyone been through something similar? i’m feeling a little anxious about it.
yeah, if they ask, you gotta disclose it. even though it was discharged years ago, they’ll still want to know. just be honest about it.

i thought i could skip it since it wasn’t on my credit report. do you think they’ll penalize me for not mentioning it earlier?

nah, i don’t think they’ll penalize you. they’ve probably seen it already since they check your background before approval. just be upfront now.
same here! i filed bankruptcy years ago, and when i applied for a loan later, i wasn’t sure if i had to disclose it. it was a bit confusing.

did you disclose it? how did the bank respond?

yeah, i did. the bank was cool about it, didn’t make a big deal of it. just make sure you’re honest.
you absolutely need to disclose it if they ask. i know it feels a little weird, but it’s better to be upfront. they probably check your credit history anyway.

but it’s not on my credit report. should i just write it in my application?

yeah, write it in. even if it’s not on your report, you still have to disclose it. don’t worry too much, just be transparent.
it’s definitely important to disclose all the info. it might be uncomfortable, but honesty will save you from trouble down the line.

yeah, that’s what i’m thinking. should i mention i didn’t know i needed to disclose it?

you can, but focus on the fact that you’re correcting it now. don’t dwell too much on the mistake, just correct it.
the weird part is you work for the bank. have you talked to anyone internally about this?

not yet. i was planning to handle it on my own. do you think i should ask someone at work?

maybe just casually ask a colleague in the same department. they could give you some insight without making it awkward.
it might not be on your credit report now, but you’re still required to disclose it. they’ll likely find it during the process anyway.

yeah, i guess they might find it. should i just include it on the HELOC form now?

yep, definitely. just include it honestly. it’s better to get ahead of it than to let them find it later.
even though it was discharged, they’re still going to ask. the best thing you can do is disclose it right away. honesty is the best route here.
