Hey guys, I’ve been a discharged bankrupt for a while now. I’ve spent the last three years working for a company and recently, they offered me the chance to become a director. Do I need to tell them about my discharged bankruptcy status? I’m just not sure if it’s something I should bring up.
If you’re thinking about becoming a director, you might want to disclose your discharged bankruptcy. Some companies might ask, but legally, you don’t have to volunteer that info unless they specifically request it.
@Joss
Got it! So, it’s more about what the company asks for, not something I have to bring up on my own?
@Joss
Exactly! They could do a background check or ask during the interview process. If they don’t ask, you’re not required to mention it.
Yeah, I’ve heard that too. It really depends on the company’s policy. Some might want to know, others might not care if you’re discharged.

Interesting. I’m hoping they won’t care since it’s been a while, but I’m not sure how strict they are.

If it’s been a few years and you’ve been doing well, they might not even bring it up. Just be ready in case they do ask.
I had a similar situation. I didn’t mention my discharged bankruptcy, and they never asked. But just be prepared if they do, you know?

Good to hear! I’ll just keep it in mind and see what they ask when the time comes.
In my experience, if you’re a discharged bankrupt, it’s usually best to be honest about it if asked. Even if you’re not required to bring it up, transparency is key in a leadership role.

Yeah, that makes sense. I want to make sure everything is above board if they ask about it.

Exactly! Being upfront about it can show that you’ve learned from the past and are moving forward.
It’s good that you’ve been doing well at the company. If they offer you a directorship, they probably already trust you. Just make sure you’re ready if they bring it up.

Thanks for the advice! I feel like I’ve proven myself, so I’m hopeful it won’t be an issue.
