Hey everyone, I’m currently a 2LT in the Army and part of the HPSP scholarship program. I think I’m technically in IRR while I’m in school. Recently, a friend came to visit during a break, and they bought marijuana at a recreational dispensary in Michigan. I went inside with them, but I didn’t buy anything or use any marijuana. They scanned our IDs when we entered, but now I’m wondering if this could affect my security clearance down the line. Anyone have thoughts or experience with this? I didn’t think about it before, but I’m starting to get concerned…
Honestly, I don’t think just walking into a dispensary would affect your clearance unless you actually used or bought any. The key is if there was any illegal activity, and if you didn’t break the law, you should be fine. Just be honest about it if it comes up during your clearance check.
I’d also suggest avoiding that kind of situation in the future, just to keep things smooth. Better safe than sorry, you know?
Just to clarify, if it doesn’t show up as a major issue in a security clearance investigation, there’s no need to report it unless you’re asked specifically, right?
In my experience, the main concern is using marijuana, not just being near it. I wouldn’t worry too much unless there’s something more to it.
Also, since you’re in the IRR and still in school, I wouldn’t think this would affect anything unless you’re involved in any legal trouble. You seem to be in the clear.
