Falsely accused at work... what should I do?

I’m a teacher in Iowa, and I’ve been falsely accused of calling another staff member the b-word during a meeting. I didn’t say it, and I have a staff member who wrote a statement defending me. My principal says they have a written statement from someone, but they won’t reveal the person’s identity. I’ve already been called into meetings twice, and now I have another one scheduled on Monday with representation. This whole thing has caused me so much stress that I’ve missed work and even had high blood pressure. Has anyone dealt with something like this? What can I do?

Wow, that sounds rough. Have you talked to a lawyer yet? It might help to have someone on your side.

Not yet. I’m considering it, though. This is all so overwhelming. Do you think it’s necessary?

Yeah, if they’re asking you to bring representation, it’s probably serious. Better safe than sorry, right?

If the principal won’t reveal the accuser, how can you defend yourself properly? That doesn’t seem fair at all.

Exactly! That’s what’s so frustrating. I feel like I can’t fight this without knowing who made the claim.

Is it normal for them to keep the accuser anonymous? I thought you’d at least get to respond to their statement.

Depends on the workplace, I think. But it still feels shady if you can’t even hear their side.

Make sure your witness’s statement is in writing and ready to go. Having documentation can really help.

Good point. I already have one letter, but I’ll ask if they can include more details.

Taking a few days off is totally valid. Your health comes first. Have you thought about seeing a doctor for the stress?

I saw the nurse, and my blood pressure was through the roof. I might need to see my regular doctor next.

Stress-related health issues are no joke. Definitely follow up with your doctor if it keeps up.

What happens if the meeting on Monday doesn’t go in your favor? Do you have a backup plan?

Honestly, I don’t know. I’m just hoping to clear my name and move on from this.

Maybe start documenting everything for your own protection. Notes, emails, anything.
