So I got arrested for petit larceny recently and my court date is tomorrow. I was issued a DAT, and this is my first offense. I’m super regretful and already seeing a therapist to work on myself. There’s video evidence against me, and I don’t have a lawyer. Any tips on how to handle tomorrow? What should I expect?
First offense? You’ll probably get pre-trial diversion. It’s pretty common.

What’s pre-trial diversion? I’m new to all this.

Basically, you do some community service, maybe probation, and if you stay out of trouble, they dismiss the charge.

Yeah, it’s like a deal to keep your record clean. Just follow through with what they ask.
You could plead not guilty even with the evidence. You’ve got rights.

Not guilty? But there’s video proof I did it.

Doesn’t matter. Pleading not guilty gives you more time to work things out, like getting a lawyer or exploring options.

Agree. Even if it’s obvious, you don’t have to plead guilty right away.
What did you take? Sometimes the impact matters. Like, did the store lose money?

I stole makeup from Sephora, and I left the store with it. Loss prevention stopped me outside and brought me back in.
@Shae
Got it. So there’s a loss. Your remorse and therapy could help though.
@Shae
Yeah, definitely mention you’re in therapy and regret it. It shows you’re taking it seriously.
What are you wearing tomorrow? It might sound silly, but looking respectful can make a difference.

Black slacks and a button-down blouse. Nothing revealing.

Perfect. Keep it simple and professional. First impressions matter.
If pre-trial diversion doesn’t happen, what’s the worst-case scenario?

If you plead guilty, they’d move straight to sentencing. Probably a fine or probation since it’s a first offense.

But since it’s your first time, diversion or a reduced sentence is more likely.
