I got a ticket for going 72 in a 55 zone. First offense in almost 8 years of driving. The officer told me to just pay the fine and not to sign the ticket. Anyone know what I should do? I don’t want to mess this up.
First off, don’t worry too much. It’s common for first-time offenders to just pay the fine. In North Dakota, you usually don’t have to sign the ticket if you’re just paying it. But if you want to contest it, you’d have to show up to court. The officer probably just didn’t want to deal with the paperwork.
@Jamie
Thanks for the info! I didn’t know I didn’t have to sign it. I’ll just pay it and move on then.
Yeah, it’s a pretty standard procedure in North Dakota. Also, if you haven’t had a speeding ticket in a while, you might not even get points on your license. Just make sure you pay it before the due date to avoid any late fees.
@Leith
Oh, that’s a relief. I’ll pay it online then. I was worried it might affect my record or insurance.
I got a similar ticket once. Just make sure to keep a copy of the payment receipt, in case there’s any issue later. It’s always good to have proof that you paid.

Great tip! I’ll keep the receipt just in case. Didn’t think about that.
I know it’s tempting to just pay it and move on, but if you want to avoid points on your license, you might want to look into whether you can take a defensive driving course or something. Sometimes that helps reduce penalties.
@Bayley
Hmm, I didn’t think of that. I’ll check if I can do a course to keep it off my record. Thanks!
If you ever get another ticket, you might want to consider going to court and asking for a reduced fine. Some judges will do that for first-time offenders. But yeah, for now, just paying the fine sounds like the easiest route.
@Jasper
Yeah, I’ll keep that in mind for the future. Hopefully, I won’t get another ticket anytime soon, lol.
