Got a traffic ticket for going 25 over... any tips for my court appearance?

I recently got a traffic ticket for going 25 over the limit (90 in a 65). I have a required court appearance tomorrow, and I’m hoping to get the charge reduced. I have dashcam footage that could help, but IDK if that’s enough. Anyone been in a similar situation? What should I expect or do to try to get a lesser charge?

I’ve been there before. You’re in Colorado, right? If you’re representing yourself, it might help to just be upfront and show the dashcam footage if you think it helps. But I’d also try to ask for a plea deal to reduce the points or charge. They usually work with you if you’re honest.

I’d recommend trying to talk to the prosecutor before your case is called. Just walk up to them and ask if they’re open to negotiating. If they’re not, you might need to request a continuance, but they’ll usually work with you if you’re polite and reasonable.

In my experience, it’s better to try and talk before your case starts. You don’t want to wait until the judge is involved, as they might be less flexible. Also, asking for a continuance is fine if you need more time to work something out with the prosecutor.

Yeah, I had a similar ticket and just admitted I was speeding but asked if they could reduce it because it wasn’t super reckless. I didn’t have dashcam footage, but being honest helped. They knocked down the charge to something that wouldn’t impact my license too much.

Honestly, I’d just focus on being respectful and explain that it was a momentary thing, not like you’re a habitual speeder. It’s all about how you present yourself. Just don’t come off like you’re trying to argue the charge too much, or they might dig in their heels.
