Has anyone experienced unfair treatment at work because of race or age?

So, I’ve been working at my job for two years and have never missed a day or been late. I started out as kitchen prep, and after some training, I was handling the grill and baking. But then the manager left, and things changed. A new boss came in, and suddenly I was moved to the back of the kitchen while another guy took over the grill and baking. Then, I got pushed around a lot, doing all the heavy lifting and stacking for others. I never even got a break during all this. After a while, they moved me into the seafood department, where I really excelled and helped it become number one in the state. But instead of getting recognized, they brought in some random guy and gave him a manager position, making me train him. No credit for what I’d done. It just feels like the company is playing favorites. The new boss is Filipino, and now there’s Filipino music playing over the speakers, with almost all the staff being Filipino. I’ve been working hard for years, and at 70 years old, I’m still putting in the work. But it feels like they’re doing everything they can to keep me down. Does anyone else think they’re being passed over for promotions or treated unfairly because of their age or background? I don’t know what to do anymore, and I can’t just quit without doing something about it. Anyone have any advice or been in a similar situation?

Wow, that’s a tough situation. It definitely sounds like discrimination based on your age and possibly race. Have you thought about talking to HR? Or would that be too risky? I know it can be hard to speak up when you’re afraid of losing your job.

@Dax
I agree with DEF. HR can sometimes help, but it might just make things worse, especially if the company is already playing favorites. You could try documenting everything and see if that gives you leverage later on if you decide to take further action.

@Dior
Yeah, documenting is key! Even if HR isn’t helpful, having everything written down could help if you decide to go to the EEOC or get legal help.

Ugh, that sounds awful. It’s so frustrating when hard work goes unrecognized and it feels like favoritism is in play. I think you might have a case if you can prove it’s happening because of your age or race. Have you considered looking into legal advice or discrimination claims?

@Halston
Yeah, if it’s truly discrimination, you might want to look into filing a complaint with the EEOC or something. It’s tough, but it might be the only way to get things to change.

That’s crazy, especially after all the hard work you’ve put in. It sucks when you get passed over like that, especially when others are getting promoted for less experience. I hope you’re able to do something about it. Don’t let them walk all over you.

It really sounds like you’re being treated unfairly. The situation with the Filipino music and favoritism feels weird, like they’re making the workplace more exclusive. I get that you don’t want to risk losing your job, but if you’re being discriminated against, it might be worth talking to a lawyer or going to the EEOC.

@Wren
That’s a good point. The whole environment there seems a bit off, and it could be worth it to at least ask for advice. Maybe start with some legal guidance to see what your options are.

Sounds like they’re trying to push you out or make your work environment uncomfortable. It’s messed up how hard you’ve worked, and they don’t seem to appreciate it. Have you thought about filing a discrimination claim? I know it’s tough, but you might have a case here.
