Has anyone had issues with arbitration fees getting out of control?

I’m in the middle of arbitration, and the costs are just insane. Got a bill for $2880 from the court reporter for 16 hours of testimony, plus $36,300 from the arbitrator for 11 days at $3300 per day! I was initially told these costs would be split 50/50, but now I’m stuck with a big chunk. Anyone else deal with unexpected arbitration costs? Is this normal?

Wow, that sounds way over the top. I thought arbitration was supposed to be cheaper than going to court?

Right? But when they start charging high daily rates, it can be just as pricey. OP, maybe check your agreement to see if costs like these were mentioned.

@Paris
Good idea, I’ll go through it again. Seems like they’re making up fees as they go.

Honestly, $3300/day sounds ridiculous. Did you try finding out the average rate? Some arbitrators charge way less.

Yeah, OP mentioned finding the arbitrator’s typical rate was $1900/day, so $3300/day is kinda questionable.

@Dustin
Exactly. They’re either hiking the rate or adding extra charges. Definitely worth questioning.

If the costs are getting this high, it might be worth considering other options. The EEOC could be a route if this feels like it’s more about pressure than fairness.

True, but the EEOC only handles cases with discrimination, right? Make sure it fits what you’re dealing with.

@Micah
Yep, exactly. EEOC is mostly for discrimination or unfair employment practices. Worth checking if it applies here!

I’ve heard of arbitrators sending invoices that don’t match up with what was initially promised. Always get everything in writing.

Yeah, I’m trying to get a detailed breakdown. Seems like transparency is optional with these fees.

It’s good you’re meeting with an attorney. Might be the best way to get clarity on all these fees and options for moving forward.

For sure, I’m hoping they can help. This whole thing has been a nightmare.
