Help needed... filing an appeal and handling jurisdictional statement deadlines?

I filed an appeal recently and got a notice that my jurisdictional statement is due… like this Friday. I tried calling the court for an extension, but they only extended my opening brief, not the jurisdictional statement. Does anyone know if I can file something to push that deadline back? My attorneys either haven’t called back or can’t take the case, so I’m feeling totally lost here. Any help would be so appreciated.

Oh man, that sounds stressful! If you’re self-representing, you might need to file a motion to ask for an extension. Courts sometimes let you e-file, but it really depends. Did the clerk mention anything about that when you called?

@Nash
I called, but they didn’t give me much info about filing a motion for the jurisdictional statement. They were mainly talking about the brief. I’ll try asking again… just wanted to check if anyone’s done this before!

Maybe check with a court librarian too—they might have more details. Sometimes they have examples or templates for motions, so you’re not starting from scratch.

Have you tried requesting a Zoom link to ask for the continuance? I think some courts are flexible with remote hearings, especially for procedural stuff.

I was wondering about that! I might call the clerk and see if it’s an option. It’d be way easier if I could handle this over Zoom.

Just curious… what happens if you miss tomorrow’s deadline? Will it mess up the appeal?

That’s exactly what I’m afraid of! If I don’t file it, I think they might dismiss the appeal, but I’m not totally sure. Wish there was a guide for this!

Usually, missing a deadline in appeals can be bad, but if you file ASAP with a good reason, they might let it slide. But yeah, better safe than sorry!

Did you already try filing an ‘order to show cause’? It’s kinda a motion where you state what someone didn’t comply with. Not sure if it applies here, though.

I actually filed an appeal, but I’ll look into that. Thanks for the idea!

Yeah, that’s usually more for making someone explain why they didn’t follow an order, but good to keep in mind for other parts of your case!

When I had to file my jurisdictional statement, I was able to submit a basic outline explaining my grounds for appeal, like ‘abuse of discretion’ and ‘denial of due process.’ You might not need to be super detailed.

@Storm
Thanks, that helps a lot! I might just focus on the main points like bias and her ignoring my evidence. Fingers crossed they accept it.
