Hey everyone, need advice for my nephew who’s starting pre-k in NY. Vaccines are mandatory, but he’s allergic to eggs and has autism. The school sent a document saying egg allergies aren’t a valid reason to skip vaccines. We’re really not comfortable with him getting vaccinated. Any idea what we can do here? Would love any legal or practical advice.
Ugh, that sounds super stressful. Have you spoken to a lawyer yet? You might want to ask about exemptions—there could be a medical one for his allergy.

Thanks, that’s a good idea. Do you know if medical exemptions are still allowed in NY?

Yeah, I think they allow it, but the rules are really strict now. You’ll probably need a letter from his doctor explaining the allergy.
Not sure if this helps, but my cousin’s kid had a similar issue. Their doctor wrote a detailed note about the risks of the vaccine. It’s worth trying!

That’s helpful! Do you know if their school accepted it right away, or was there pushback?

They had to go back and forth a bit, but eventually, the school accepted it. Definitely keep copies of everything!
IDK much about this, but couldn’t you reach out to an education attorney? They’d know how to handle these mandatory vaccine rules.

Yeah, good call. Any tips on finding a good attorney for this kind of thing?

Try searching for education law attorneys in NY. Some offer free consultations, so you can get a feel for who’s good.
FYI, egg allergies don’t necessarily mean a kid can’t get vaccinated. Some vaccines don’t even use egg-based stuff anymore.

Oh really? I didn’t know that. Do you know which vaccines are egg-free?

Yeah, most flu vaccines used to have egg, but now there are egg-free options. You’d need to ask the doc which ones are safe for him.
Honestly, I’d double-check everything with a pediatrician and maybe the school. They might know if there’s wiggle room on this.

Good point. I’ll definitely ask them. Just worried they might push back since they already sent that doc saying no exceptions.

Yeah, but they still have to follow the law. If the allergy’s legit, they can’t just ignore that.
