So my driver’s license got suspended a couple of years ago after an auto accident. I haven’t gotten any official docs about it, but I’ve been through traffic school and have a DMV record. Is there any way I can apply for a new license now? I heard something about a hardship license but IDK if it applies to me. Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do?
Hey, sorry to hear about that. You might be able to get a hardship license, but it totally depends on where you live. It’s usually just for work or other essential stuff. Have you checked with the DMV in your state?
@Jean
Yeah, I had something similar happen a while ago. The DMV said I could apply for a hardship license, but they needed a judge’s approval. Definitely call them to get more info!

Got it, I’ll call them. Hopefully, they can give me more details. Thanks for the info!
That’s a tough spot. You won’t be able to just apply for a new license if it’s been suspended. You usually have to wait until your suspension is up. Have you checked how long you’re suspended for?

Yeah, it’s been 2-3 years now, but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to drive yet. Do you know if I can get my license back sooner or if I have to wait the whole time?
@kinsleywarren
You might have to wait it out, but check your DMV records. Some states have early reinstatement programs if you meet certain conditions.
I’ve been through something similar. I’m pretty sure you can’t just apply for a new license while your suspension is active. However, if you were in a car accident and it was tied to the suspension, you might be able to get your license back earlier if you complete all your requirements. Check with the DMV for specifics in your state.
Btw, just to clarify, when they talk about ‘hardship license,’ it’s a special permit that lets you drive for essential reasons. But it’s not guaranteed and depends on the state’s laws.

Oh, I didn’t know that. So it’s not like a regular license then? Just for specific purposes?
@kinsleywarren
Exactly. It’s pretty limited—just work, school, or medical reasons. You’d need to prove that to the court or DMV.
One more thing—make sure you haven’t missed any payments or paperwork from the DMV. Sometimes that can extend your suspension time.

I’ll double-check. I haven’t gotten any updates, so that might be the issue. Thanks for the heads-up!
