How can I quickly get my husband’s Marine discharge papers?

My husband passed away yesterday, and I urgently need his U.S. Marine discharge papers (DD Form 214) for the funeral home tomorrow. I haven’t started any official requests yet and don’t know where to begin. I’m overwhelmed and running out of time. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice would mean the world right now.

So sorry for your loss. I’d suggest contacting the National Archives (NARA) ASAP. They can sometimes expedite requests.

Thanks. Do you know if they can send digital copies or just mail them? I’m in a time crunch.

Yeah, they can email temporary certificates or digital copies in emergencies. Call them directly to explain the situation.

Make sure you have documents like a death certificate or proof of marriage ready. NARA will need those to process your request.

Good to know. I have my medical proxy and marriage certificate, but the death certificate might take a few days. Will that delay things?

It shouldn’t if you explain the urgency. They’re usually understanding for funeral cases.

If he had a VA account, you might find the DD214 there. Worth checking if you have his login info.

Oh, I didn’t think of that! I’ll check. Thanks for the tip.

FYI, you can also try calling the VA directly if he was receiving any benefits. They might have the form on file.

Thanks! Do you know the best number to call for that?

1-800-827-1000 is the general VA line. They can guide you to the right department.

Sorry for your loss. Try checking if the funeral home can help. They often deal with military paperwork and might have contacts.

That’s a great idea. I’ll ask them when I go tomorrow. Thanks so much.
