I had to return my car because of my health condition, and now I need to cancel my registration before it expires in December. I want to avoid any extra fees, so what documents do I need to stop my registration? Anyone done this before?
Yeah, I had to do this last year. You need to return your license plates to the DMV. Once you do that, your registration is officially canceled.

What if I lost my plates? I don’t have them anymore…
@Tan
You’ll probably need to fill out a lost plate affidavit or report it to the DMV. Check their website for the right form.
Make sure you bring proof of ownership or your registration when you go to the DMV. They might ask for ID too.

Good to know! Is a state ID okay, or do they need a driver’s license?
@Kelby
State ID should be fine as long as it’s valid. Just something to verify your identity.
Also, some DMVs require a plate surrender form. Check their website before you go, so you don’t have to make multiple trips.

Oh wow, I didn’t even think of that. I’ll look it up. Thanks!
Once you surrender the plates, ask for a receipt. It proves you canceled the registration in case there’s ever a problem.

That’s a great tip. Didn’t even think about getting proof. Appreciate it!
If your registration expires in December, try to do it before then so you don’t get hit with renewal fees.

Yeah, that’s exactly why I’m trying to handle it now. Thanks for the heads-up!
