I legally changed my last name back to my maiden name on Nov 15, 2024, but now I’m trying to update my driver’s license. Anyone know what steps I need to follow to make that change? The website keeps saying my IP address is invalid and won’t accept my credit card… IDK what’s going on.
For name changes, you usually need to go in person to your local DPS office. You can’t do it online or by mail. They’ll need your legal name change document, like a court order or marriage certificate, and you’ll have to pay a small fee (usually around $11).

Oh, I didn’t know I had to go in person! That’s a bummer. Thanks for letting me know!
Yeah, same here. I had to update everything when I changed my name. Don’t forget to check with the Social Security Administration (SSA) first, though. If your name isn’t updated there, it might mess up the license change.
@Joss
Good point. I’ll check with them first before I go to DPS. Didn’t even think of that!
One more thing—if you own a car, you’ll need to update your vehicle title and registration too. They’re separate from the license, but it’s a good idea to handle both at the same time.

Ah, I didn’t know about the vehicle title thing. I’ll make sure to take care of that when I’m at the office!
The whole process sounds a bit confusing, but it’s pretty straightforward once you get there. Just make sure you bring all the right paperwork. Also, did you try calling the office about your credit card issue? That could be a separate problem.
@Rowan
I haven’t tried calling yet. I’ll give them a ring to figure that out too. Thanks for the suggestion!
It can be a bit of a hassle, but once you get your new license, you’ll be all set! The temporary license they give you is good for 60 days, so you’ll still be legal while you wait for the new one.

Good to know! At least I won’t be driving around with an expired license while I wait. Appreciate the info!
