Hey everyone, I’m a Vietnam vet with 100% disability, and I’m trying to get a disabled license plate for the first time. The DMV says I need to go through them, but I’m not sure where to start. I have my paperwork from the military and everything, but the process feels kinda confusing. Do I need a doctor to sign off on anything? Also, is it better to go to the DMV in person or mail the stuff? Any advice would help. Thanks in advance!
Hey, thank you for your service! I went through this for my dad. You’ll need a doctor’s signature on the DMV form. Do you have a primary doctor?

Thanks for the info! I don’t see a primary doctor often, just hit or miss since COVID. Can I use a VA doctor?

Yeah, a VA doctor works. Just call the last VA clinic you visited and ask for an appointment. They should help!

What’s a VA doctor? Sorry if that’s a dumb question.

Not dumb at all! VA doctors are at Veterans Affairs clinics and hospitals. They handle healthcare for vets.
You’ll also need to fill out the DMV’s form for disabled veterans. I think it’s called Form 256V or something. Have you seen it?

Yeah, someone shared the link. I’m filling it out now. Thanks for the reminder!

No problem! Make sure you have your old plates and registration ready when you go to the DMV.
I mailed my application instead of going in person. Saved me a ton of time. You could try that if it’s hard to get around.

That’s a good idea. Do I just mail it to the address on the form?

Yep, exactly. Just include your completed form, a copy of your registration, and your current plates.
Thank you for your service, sir! Do you have a local VA clinic? They might be able to guide you through the process directly.

Yeah, I’ll try calling them tomorrow. Hoping they can help set up an appointment.

Good call. They’re usually pretty helpful with stuff like this. Best of luck!
When I helped my neighbor, they said it’s quicker if you go in person. But mailing works if you’re not in a rush.

I might try mailing it then. Getting to the DMV is a hassle these days.

Totally get it. Just double-check the address on the form. You don’t want it getting lost!
