Hey, I’m looking to get evaluated for VA disability benefits for the first time. Anyone know what steps I need to take? I’m thinking about using online chat to get started. Anyone have experience with that?
I just went through the process a few months ago. It’s pretty straightforward. You need to make an appointment at your local VA medical center. They’ll do a medical exam to figure out your disability rating.
@Cass
Wait, so you don’t apply online first? Thought that was how it worked…

Yeah, it’s a bit confusing. But you still need the in-person medical exam before anything can be processed. You’ll start the claim online, but the exam is a must.
I did my evaluation through an online chat too! They set everything up for you and give you info about what to expect during the process. Very helpful!

Did you talk to a lawyer through chat or just a technician? Trying to figure out who’s best to talk to.
@Arden
I chatted with a lawyer’s assistant. They connect you with the right people for your first time, like a tech who walks you through the whole process. It was super easy.
I’m also new to this, so I’m just figuring it out too. Is the medical exam really necessary for every type of claim?

Yep, even if you have medical records showing your condition, they’ll still do an exam to determine your disability rating. It’s part of the process.
How long did it take to get everything set up for you guys? I’m not sure what to expect in terms of timing.

For me, it took about a week to get everything sorted once I made the appointment. The actual exam was quick, but the paperwork can take a bit longer to process.
I saw a post on here about some people having trouble with their evaluations. Is there anything I should be worried about before starting the process?

Most issues seem to come from missing paperwork or not following up on certain things. Just make sure everything’s in order before you start the claim. They’ll guide you through it.
