I’m a senior living in Folsom, CA, and I need to renew my driver’s license. Do I need an appointment, and what should I bring? Also, is it possible to do this over the phone, or do I need to go in person?
You can schedule an appointment online or call the DMV. If you go in person, make sure to bring your current license and any necessary documents. FYI, seniors still need to do a vision test.

What’s the link for scheduling an appointment? I don’t want to wait in line forever.

Here’s the link: Schedule an Appointment - California DMV- California DMV. It’s super easy to pick a time that works for you.
I’m in Folsom too! The DMV on E Bidwell is where you’ll need to go. They open at 8 AM most days, except Wednesday when it’s 9 AM.

Do they take walk-ins, or is an appointment required?

They take walk-ins, but it can be a long wait. Appointments are definitely the way to go if you can.
As a senior, you don’t have to take the written test anymore. Just the vision test and a new photo.

Wait, really? That’s great news. I was stressing about the test.

Yep, they changed the rule recently. Makes it a lot easier for seniors.
Pro tip: Start your renewal application online to save time. You’ll still need to go in person for the vision test and photo.

How do you start the application online? Is it tricky?

Not at all! Just go to the DMV’s site and follow the prompts under license renewal. It’s pretty straightforward.
I went through this last month. The Folsom DMV is pretty efficient, especially if you have an appointment. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip! How early should I get there for my appointment?

I’d say about 10-15 minutes early is fine. They usually run on time.
