How do I switch from visitor to permanent resident?

I’ve been on a B1/B2 visa for a while now, and I’m wondering how to change my status to a Green Card. My current visa is still valid for another year, but I want to start the process before it expires. Anyone know the steps or have tips?

You’ll need a sponsor, either a family member or an employer. Do you have someone who could sponsor you?

I think my cousin could sponsor me, but does it matter if they’re just a cousin and not immediate family?

If you have a job offer, your employer can sponsor you. Do you have one lined up?

Not yet. Is it a long process for employers to sponsor someone?

It can be. They need to file Form I-140 and might need a labor certification. It’s worth asking if they’re willing.

Just a heads up: You need to maintain your legal status while applying. Overstaying can mess things up big time.

Good to know! I’ll make sure to stay on top of my visa dates.

Have you looked into the Diversity Visa Lottery? It’s not a sure thing, but it’s another option.

I’ve heard of it but didn’t think I’d qualify. Do you know what the eligibility is?

Eligibility depends on your country of birth and education/work experience. It’s worth checking out!

Honestly, hiring an immigration lawyer could save you a lot of time and headaches. They’ll guide you through everything.

Yeah, I’m considering it. Any idea how much they usually charge for this kind of thing?

Depends on the lawyer, but most offer consultations. Shop around and find someone experienced in immigration.
