I just bought a car from a friend in NC and I want to send it to my son in Texas. I only have the title that was signed over to me in NC. I want to gift this car to my son in Texas. So how do I do all this and satisfy both state’s requirements?
Hey! So first things first, you’ll need to go to the DMV in NC and officially register the car in your name. Once you’ve done that, you can transfer it as a gift to your son. Is your son’s license still in NC or does he have one in Texas?
@Azriel
Yeah, you’ll need to get the title in your name first. After that, you’ll sign it over to your son as a gift. Just make sure to say ‘gift’ in the price section.
@Azriel
I think the process is easier if the title’s in your name first. Does your son have a Texas address?
You’ll need to go to the NC DMV first to get the title in your name before gifting it. Don’t forget about the Gift Affidavit for Texas! Your son might need that to avoid taxes.

Ah, good to know! So I can do the whole transfer on the same title after I register it in my name?
For the transport, a car shipping service would be a good call. That way, you don’t have to deal with temporary tags or anything like that. Just make sure the shipping company is legit!

I was about to say the same! Shipping it straight to Texas makes everything easier. Do they need any paperwork for shipping?
Yeah, you can use the same title after registering it in your name! Just make sure everything is signed properly. Also, Texas might have a form to avoid the sales tax for gifts—look into that.

Oh cool, I didn’t know Texas had that! So it’s only about the title and a few forms when he gets it, right?
I think the title you have should work. Just make sure it’s notarized if needed in NC. After registering the car in your name, you’ll transfer it to your son in Texas. Does your son know about this process?
@Kirby
Yep, my son’s on board. Just need to figure out the paperwork part. Thanks for the help!
