Hey everyone, I’ve got two MTA tickets in New York and I’m wondering how long they’ll stay on my record. I’ve heard they might not even go on a criminal record if they’re minor, but I’m not sure about the details. Does anyone know how this works? What happens if I don’t pay them on time? Any advice would be great!
If the tickets were issued by the Transit Adjudication Bureau (TAB), they’re civil violations and won’t go on your criminal record.

Good to know! What happens if I forget to pay them? Does it mess with my credit or something?

Yeah, unpaid tickets can lead to judgments against you and might show up on your credit report. Better to handle them ASAP.
If the tickets are criminal, like for fare evasion, they might show up as misdemeanors. Those stay on your record unless sealed.

Oh wow, so does that mean they’re there forever unless I do something about it?

Pretty much. You’d have to take legal steps to seal or expunge them if they’re misdemeanors.
If it’s a minor violation and not criminal, resolving it quickly is the best way to avoid future hassles.

Yeah, I just want to make sure it’s not going to haunt me later. Thanks for the advice!

You’re welcome. Just check with the Transit Adjudication Bureau to confirm the status of your tickets.
If you’re not sure if they’re criminal or civil, you can call the TAB or check the ticket details online.

I’ll do that. Do they usually give you a clear breakdown of what happens if you don’t pay?

Yeah, they should explain the consequences, like late fees or collections. Definitely worth checking.
If you’re worried about your record, it might be worth asking a lawyer to confirm how these tickets affect you long-term.

That’s a good idea. Do you think it’s necessary for minor infractions though?

Probably not unless you’re dealing with something serious, but it’s always better to know exactly where you stand.
