I got an honorable discharge but still have an Article 92 under the UCMJ. How much does that impact me? It happened last year, and when I tried to get on base today with a sponsor, I was denied access. Can I still get a veterans ID card? Also, does this show up on a civilian background check, and could I ever get a TS/SCI clearance again?
Yeah, an Article 92 can have some effect, especially on base access and clearance stuff. But since you have an honorable discharge, you should still be eligible for a veteran’s ID. Check with the VA for specifics—they’ll give you the best info.
@Skye
Got it, thanks! Wasn’t sure if that Article would block me from getting any veteran benefits.
For the background check, it depends on the employer. Some might see it, especially in government jobs, but a lot of civilian roles may not look that deep.

Interesting! I’m aiming to get back into government work, but I’m worried it’ll come up and hold me back.

Government jobs can be tough on that stuff, but it’s not impossible. Show them you’ve moved on from it!
If you want a TS/SCI clearance again, it’ll probably be a challenge but not totally out of reach. Time since the incident and your current record will matter a lot.

Good to know! I thought I was out of the running for sure.

Nah, I know people who got clearances back after a few years. Keep building your case with positive steps.
@Kade
Thanks for the encouragement! Guess I’ll keep at it.
Honestly, with an Article 92 for drug use, some employers may be wary, but if you show them you’ve changed, it could go in your favor. The honorable discharge helps a ton.

That’s what I’m hoping for. I’m also in school now, trying to rebuild my rep.

School’s a good move! Shows you’re serious about moving forward.
Btw, for any future civilian roles, you might want to downplay the Article unless it’s directly relevant. Skills and experience can often outweigh it if you’ve grown since then.

Good tip. I’ll definitely focus on what I can bring to the table.
