Hey everyone, I’m living in the Netherlands and the wait times for driving exams are over 6 months here. I’m a Dutch citizen and wondering what my best option would be to get a driver’s license quickly in another country that I can use across Europe. Anyone know if Belgium or Portugal is an option? Do I need to live there for a while first?
I’ve heard Belgium is a good option! Their system is less strict, but you might need to check residency rules.

Yeah, I read something about needing to live there for 6 months… any idea if that’s true?

Pretty sure that’s for permanent residency. You might just need proof of temporary residency to apply.
Portugal could work too. They’re known to be flexible, but you’ll need to double-check their requirements.

Do they have the same 6-month rule as Belgium?

It’s similar, but they might let you apply with proof of temporary stay. Worth asking local driving schools.
What about leaving the EU to reset your time and coming back? Might be easier.

Would that really work? When does the ‘6 months’ start over?

It usually resets if you leave for at least 90 days, but it depends on how they track it.
I’ve got a Georgian license, and I heard it’s valid for 6 months in the EU. Anyone know if it’s hard for them to track how long you’ve been here?

Good question! I wonder if they coordinate across countries for this?

They might not check unless you’re pulled over or caught. But if they do, it could get tricky.
