How to transfer my late dad’s car to my name?

I live in Maine, and my dad, who lived in California, just passed away. He had an auto loan with a credit union. I gave them the death certificate, and they said I can keep the car as long as payments are being made. Now I need to transfer the registration to my name and bring the car to Maine. What should I do next?

Sorry for your loss. You’ll probably want to start with the credit union to confirm the loan situation. Did they say you need to pay it off first?

Thanks. They said I can just keep making payments and don’t need to transfer the loan to my name.

That’s good news! You’ll still need to deal with the title and registration though. Have you checked with the California DMV?

Make sure to ask the credit union about the lien on the title. If the loan’s not paid off, they might have specific requirements.

Good point! I’ll ask them about that. Would they need anything besides the death certificate for the lien?

@Finley
Probably proof that you’re the legal heir. If there’s a will or probate involved, that might come into play.

@Finley
Yeah, they might ask for a probate court order if the estate isn’t settled yet.

When you get the title sorted, you’ll need to take it to the Maine DMV to register the car there. They’ll issue new plates for you.

Got it. Do I need anything special since the car is coming from California?

@Finley
Maybe an emissions certificate if Maine requires it. Definitely call ahead to check so you’re prepared.

You’ll also need a Statement of Facts form for the California DMV. That’s usually required for transfers after someone passes away.

What’s that form for? I’ve never heard of it.

@Finley
It’s a document explaining the circumstances of the transfer, like your dad’s passing and your claim to the car. It’s pretty standard.

If the car’s going across states, maybe look into transport options too. Driving it yourself might not be ideal if it’s far.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Any tips on finding a good transport company?

@Finley
Check reviews online and get quotes from a few companies. Look for ones with experience in interstate transport.
