If I file a police report, will they know it was me?

Hey, I’ve been dealing with someone who’s been harassing me lately. If I file a police report against them, will they be notified? Will they know it was me who reported them? Just wondering how this works.

Hey, yeah, I’ve wondered the same thing. When you file a police report, you can actually request confidentiality. So they won’t know it was you who reported it unless you tell them.

Oh that’s good to know! So it’s kinda like being anonymous? I wasn’t sure if they’d find out eventually.

@Riley
Exactly! You can stay anonymous, and the police will handle it from there. They won’t go around telling the person who reported them unless it’s a court situation or something.

In case you’re wondering, harassment is serious. If you file that report, the police are supposed to act on it. But if you don’t report it, they won’t know and it could keep happening.

Good point, I’ve seen cases where stuff gets ignored if there’s no official report. Thanks for the heads up .

I’m curious too! If they don’t find out, what happens after? Does the person get a warning, or does the police just sit on it for a while?

From what I know, harassment needs to be reported to your local police for action. If you don’t file, it’s like nothing ever happened, unfortunately.

@Cade
Ah, so basically, reporting it is the only way to get them to do something about it? Got it, thanks .

If you’re worried about whether they’ll contact the person right away, it kind of depends on the severity. But usually, they’ll need to investigate before talking to anyone involved.

Oh, okay, I was wondering about that. I guess it won’t be like an instant thing where they knock on their door right away?

@Daryn
Nope, they’ll probably take some time to look into it. It’s not like a quick fix.

If you’ve been harassed, definitely report it. It’s the first step in stopping it. Just make sure to keep any evidence you have, too, in case things escalate later on.

Yeah, that’s a good reminder. I guess documenting everything is key in case things get worse.
