Hey, I was arrested recently, and I requested to see the warrant, but the officer said they didn’t have to show it. They just got the ‘hit’ or notification and went to pick me up. Is that how it works in Indiana, or are they supposed to show it to you at the time of the arrest? Anyone know how it works here?
In Indiana, officers don’t have to show you the warrant at the time of arrest. They can make the arrest based on an electronic notification or a ‘hit’ from a database. They just need to confirm the warrant exists, but it’s not required for them to hand over the physical warrant in that moment.
@Dara
Wow, I didn’t know that. I always thought they had to show you the actual warrant when you asked. Guess not in Indiana, huh?

Yeah, it’s pretty wild. They can just verify it electronically, and that’s good enough legally. But if you want more details, you can always check with legal counsel later.
That’s pretty wild. So even if you ask to see it, they don’t have to? But they can tell you why they’re arresting you, right? Just no physical proof in hand?

Exactly. They should explain why you’re being arrested and what the charges are, but they’re not required to show you the actual warrant in hand. They might show it on their system, though, like the officer did for the OP.
That’s crazy, I thought they had to show it right away. But if they just get the ‘hit,’ I guess that’s enough for them to arrest you. Anyone know if this happens in other states too?

I think other states do it differently, but in Indiana, yeah, they don’t have to show the warrant right away. It’s based on that electronic notification, so it’s kind of like they already have the confirmation.
Yeah, the officer sounds pretty understanding, which is nice. Sometimes it’s just about building trust and proving the case over time, especially with stuff like drug dealer behavior.

Exactly! It’s good to know the officer is on your side, especially if they’re doing extra work like following the suspect. Hope things turn out better for you!
Crazy stuff. But I get the feeling you’re not alone in thinking there might be some corruption in law enforcement. Things like that can make it hard to trust the system.

Yeah, corruption is a serious issue. Hopefully, the officer will stay on it, though. If they’re genuinely interested in helping, it could lead to something positive.
