Is it bigamy if he married without registering...?

I’m going through a divorce that’s gotten pretty complicated. We’re both Indian citizens but married here in the US. He went back to India last year, and I later found out he’s seeing someone there. Recently, someone shared photos of him marrying the same woman here in the US—at a temple, not registered, but according to Hindu rituals. I have proof from a PI and some bank records placing him there. Is this enough for a bigamy case in Georgia?

Wow, that’s a lot to deal with… I think bigamy charges depend on whether the law sees the religious ceremony as legally binding. Did your lawyer say anything about it?

Yeah, my lawyer mentioned that Georgia law might need more than just the religious ceremony—like actual registration. It’s tricky without that.

That makes sense. Without a legal record, it’s tough to prove. But it’s good you have some evidence, like the PI tracking him at the location.

Is there any chance that your PI can help more? Maybe with more documentation or witnesses?

The temple priest actually agreed to be a witness, which is something! It’s just about whether that’s enough proof.

@Sage
That’s good to have, but yeah, the law might still want more than a witness. Georgia laws on this seem pretty strict.

Did I get this right? It’s a religious ceremony but not registered legally? Not sure if that’s enough for a criminal case in the US…

Yes, exactly. It was a Hindu ceremony in a temple in Atlanta, no legal paperwork filed.

@Sage
Oh, got it. Might be worth still filing the report and seeing if the cops are willing to pursue it.

If he’s harassing the woman in India too, that’s another layer. You could maybe look into harassment or defamation charges here if he tried to mess with your job.

Good point! My lawyer mentioned possible defamation since he filed a report trying to make me lose my job.

@Sage
Glad you’re protected at work! It sounds like he’s not playing fair at all.

Since Georgia sees bigamy as a crime, maybe report it and see what they say? Even without registration, they might investigate.

Exactly what I was thinking. With the photos, PI report, and priest willing to testify, it might be enough to make them look into it.

@Sage
Right on. If they have enough evidence, it could put him on their radar. Doesn’t hurt to try.
