Is it fair for my daughter to miss every recess to catch up on schoolwork?

My daughter is a bit behind in school, and her teacher has her working through all recesses, lunches, and breaks to catch up. It doesn’t seem fair, and I’m wondering if there are any rules or regulations around this. She’s always been a bit slow-paced and is still young for her grade, but we’d prefer she have time to rest and socialize with her classmates. I suggested letting her bring work home, but apparently, that’s not allowed. Does anyone know if the school can require her to miss all break times?

That’s really tough for a kid! Have they offered any other options to help her catch up, like extra help outside regular hours?

Nope, nothing else so far. Just keeping her in during breaks to finish work. It feels like she’s missing out socially too.

Not letting her bring work home but taking away breaks sounds unfair. I’d bring this up with the principal.

It’s so important for kids to get breaks, especially at her age. You might want to check with the school board about any policies on this.

I agree. She’s the youngest in her class, so this is even harder on her. I’ll look into school board policies.

Have you asked if they can evaluate her for any learning differences? It might explain why she needs extra time.

Good idea. We’ve noticed she’s slower in general, but she keeps up intellectually with her classmates.

It could be worth asking. Schools often have to provide accommodations if a child needs it.

I think teachers sometimes forget how important breaks are for mental health. Is she coping well with the workload?

She does okay at home, but I’m worried about how missing every break at school affects her.

Totally understandable. Kids need downtime too. Hope they consider making some changes for her.

If they don’t listen, maybe escalate this to the school district. It’s not right for her to miss all her breaks!

I’ll definitely consider it if they don’t respond. I just want her to feel included with her classmates.

Thanks for all the suggestions! It’s comforting to know others agree this isn’t quite right.
