Hey all, I’m returning to work after short-term leave (had a knee replacement). My doctor recommended remote work when needed, but my job asked my doctor if I requested that or if the doc did. Is that allowed?
Yeah, I think employers are allowed to ask that kind of stuff as long as it’s about verifying what your doc said. My company did something similar with me.

Oh really? That’s good to know. I wasn’t sure if it was okay for them to ask my doc directly. Thanks for sharing!

Wait, so they can just call your doctor without you knowing?
@Adair
I think they can if it’s just to confirm what’s in the paperwork. It’s not like they’re asking for your whole medical history or anything.
@Adair
Ah, got it. Makes sense!
As long as your doctor is the one making the accommodation recommendation, it’s all good. Employers are allowed to check who requested it.

Yeah, my doc’s office told them it was their recommendation. Just wasn’t sure if my job was crossing a line by asking.
I think if your doctor faxed them the info directly, there’s no issue. Your employer just wants to make sure the request is legit. That’s normal.

Wait, so if the doctor faxes it directly, your employer can still ask for verification?
@Greenlee
Yeah, I think they can just check with the doc to make sure the note came from them and it’s legit.
@Greenlee
Ah okay, that clears it up. Thanks!
This happened to me too! My boss asked for clarification from my doc, but they didn’t do anything shady about it. It’s just for confirming what’s on the paperwork.

That’s good to hear. I was worried at first, but it seems pretty normal from what everyone’s saying.
