My granddaughter is 6, and she goes to Action Behavior Center for autism therapy. We’ve been told she can stay there until she’s 8, but it’s not exactly a school. Will my daughter get in trouble for not having her in public school? Anyone else been in this situation?
I think as long as the center is helping her develop and it’s part of an education plan, she should be fine. Have they mentioned anything about an IEP?

Not sure about that… what’s an IEP?

It’s an Individualized Education Plan, usually for kids who need special education services. It could be something to ask the school about.
If the center is meeting her needs, I don’t think your daughter should get in trouble. Just make sure you look into the IEP thing—it might help.

Good idea, I’ll definitely tell my daughter to check on that. Thanks!
Does the center provide any type of documentation or progress reports? That could be important if anyone questions her education.

Yeah, they give us updates on how she’s doing, like her speech therapy progress.

That’s great! Keeping that info handy might help if the district asks questions.
I’ve heard that some behavior centers work with schools, so maybe they already have some agreement in place. Does the center work with your local school district?

I don’t think so, but I’ll ask. That would make things easier!
It sounds like she’s in the right place for now, but make sure to stay on top of the state’s education requirements. The IEP could help cover that.

Thanks, I’ll make sure my daughter looks into the IEP. Appreciate the advice!
