So, I’ve been dealing with this issue for like 6 to 9 months now. My landlord FINALLY fixed my door and windows just 2 days ago, after months of me complaining about break-ins. Now they’re asking for rent even though I’ve been telling them about all this. Anyone else been through something like this?
That’s rough. Have you tried sending them a formal letter explaining why you’re withholding rent?

Nah, I’ve mostly just been calling and telling them. They keep saying they’ll get to it. Guess I’ll have to put it in writing.

Yeah, written notices are better. You need a paper trail for stuff like this, especially if it goes to court.
Why didn’t they fix it sooner if you were dealing with break-ins? That’s so dangerous.

I know, right? I’ve been telling them it’s a security issue. It’s like they just didn’t care until recently.

That’s ridiculous. You could probably argue they weren’t keeping the place safe like they’re supposed to.
Maybe it’s time to get a lawyer involved? If they’ve been ignoring you this long, it might be your best option.

I was thinking that too. But honestly, I don’t even know where to start. Florida laws confuse me.

Check with Legal Aid. They can help you understand your rights, and it’s usually free if you qualify.
Did they ever explain why they delayed the repairs? Like, were they claiming it was your fault or something?

Nope, they never gave a reason. Just kept saying they were ‘working on it.’

Sounds like they’re just trying to avoid the responsibility. Typical landlord stuff .
Have you checked your lease? Maybe there’s something in there about repairs and what they have to do.

What if they lost the lease? Can the landlord still make rules?

Good point. I’m not even sure where my lease is, but I think they still have to follow basic state laws, lease or not.
