Massive tip at work... do we have to share with others?

I’m an assistant manager at Johnny’s Subway in Michigan, and a customer just gave us a $13,297 tip for the team today! My manager says it might have to be split with people who weren’t on shift and even employees from the gas station next door. Is that actually allowed? Anyone know if we’re supposed to share it with non-tipped employees?

Whoa, that’s a huge tip! Normally, only people working get a share, right? Gas station workers shouldn’t be included if they weren’t part of the team there.

Exactly! It’s usually just split among those working, but the manager wants to involve the gas station folks.

If they’re just cashiers and don’t do the same work, they probably shouldn’t be included. You could ask HR or someone higher up for clarification.

Do you have any policy on tips? Maybe check if there’s a written rule on how tips are split.

No written policy that I know of. Usually, we just divide tips among whoever’s working.

Then it’s probably worth mentioning that to management if they’re trying to change things.

Are you the one who did the actual work for the tip? Seems like only fair you’d get a part of it without having to share with others.

Yeah, I was making sandwiches with the rest of the team on shift, so it just feels fair we get the share.

Makes sense. I’d try to stand by that if it feels unfair to include others who weren’t involved.

If the gas station staff doesn’t do any customer service work, I doubt they should be getting tip money.

That’s what I thought too. They mostly stock shelves and handle cash transactions.

Maybe remind your manager about that. Could be they just didn’t think it through.

If they keep pushing to split it unfairly, you could reach out to the state labor board. Tips are for the people who actually earned them!

Thanks for the tip (no pun intended)! I’ll look into that if they don’t reconsider.

Good plan. Sounds like you’re in the right if they’re not following the usual tip guidelines.
