Hi I’m a 19-year-old male pushing my career toward becoming a police officer. I trained day and night to get my mental and physical health great for the job. As soon as I told my boss I’m putting my 2 weeks in, he decided to say that he was going to call the police departments and police academies around my area to tell them how I would be a garbage cop, how I would kill somebody, and how I would use the force to make people my workers. I was stunned by this response. I have told my boss for years that I am going to become a police officer. I even told him in the interview how I would have to leave in a couple of years. In that moment, he was very proud and happy for me in the interview but now he wants to make sure I will never become a police officer because I am quitting. — Is this lawful?

That sounds a lot like criminal harassment to me. Does your boss have a boss?
No, he is the owner of the company.
I would send him an email then going over what happened yesterday and tell him that you believe his threats to be criminal harassment and that if you find out he has been doing that, you’re going to report him to the authorities and tell them why he’s doing this.

I have the convo recorded for a record.
You still want to communicate in writing because you have more verification of who you’re communicating with. A phone call can be interpreted differently.

Are you in a one-party consent state for recording? If not then it’s inadmissible as evidence if it came to it.
Out of interest, if he were in a one-party consent state, would he still be able to show the recording to any prospective employers if they were to ask him why they received a call from the boss?
@Harlow
You mean if he were not in a one-party consent state. In a one-party consent state there would be no wrongdoing in recording it as he is the one part consenting to the recording of his conversation.

That is good. But I agree with the previous commenter, if you must communicate from now on, use email. Ideally, just walk away from this. Sounds like a joke of an employer.

Technically extortion, which is a crime. Get him to say it in an email and take it to the police academy. Also, one bad reference when they have incentive to lie doesn’t hold much weight. All types of things they’ll learn at the academy.
