My tag was seized and license suspended... what now?

So, my tag was seized and my license was suspended because I didn’t have insurance on a car I wasn’t even using for a few months. I’ve got insurance now, but IDK how to clear all this up. Anyone know what I should do next?

That sounds super frustrating. I’d start by contacting FLHSMV and showing them proof of insurance. They’ll want that before anything else. You’ll probably also need to pay a reinstatement fee. I think they’ve got an online portal for that?

@Keir
Yeah, you can upload your insurance proof on their site, but make sure it’s for your current coverage. The old coverage from Feb-August won’t help since it was lapsed. It’s a bit confusing though, I get why you’re asking!

@Niko
Ugh, that makes sense. I was wondering if I should upload the new insurance proof. Thanks for clearing that up. I’ll try again!

You might also want to visit a local FLHSMV or tag agency office. It’s better to handle this in person. They’ll be able to walk you through what to do next. I’ve heard they can even help you get a new tag if yours was seized.

@Uma
Good idea. I didn’t even think about going in person. I’ve been having issues online with their system too. Definitely gonna check them out in person.

I had a similar thing happen to me, and it took forever to get through to FLHSMV. If you can’t get through on the phone, try emailing them or using their online portal. They’re pretty responsive that way.

@Nico
I tried emailing them before, but didn’t get a response for days. Maybe I’ll try again though. Thanks for the tip!

I think they also let you register your car as ‘non-operational’ if you’re not planning on using it for a while. Could be worth checking into that to avoid future issues!

Oh, I didn’t know about the non-operational option. That could save me a headache later if I decide to park it for a while.

Just wanted to confirm the fees for reinstatement: I think it’s $150 for a first offense, then more for any subsequent ones, but I’m not 100% sure. You might want to double-check that before going in.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll make sure to have that ready when I go. Appreciate the clarification!
