Need help proving NY domicile for in-state tuition

I’ve been a NY resident since 2004 and have a house, file taxes, etc. But since I work overseas for most of the year, the college denied my son’s in-state tuition. They said we don’t ‘live’ in NY. Anyone else dealt with this? Any tips on what to do?

Yeah, I had a similar issue when I was living out of state for work. They said I didn’t have enough physical presence in NY. Did you try showing your tax returns and voter registration?

Same here! I also had to show utility bills and bank statements to prove I was still a resident.

@Chandler
Wait, what’s a voter registration? :thinking:

It’s the card or record that shows you’re registered to vote in a specific state. Helps prove where you ‘live’ for stuff like tuition.

You might need to explain more about how NY is your permanent home. Maybe write a letter to the university and submit more docs?

Good idea! I’d also include proof that you return every summer and maybe bank statements showing you’re still using NY services.

If you were renting out your house, they might be using that against you. Maybe clarify that you only rented it short-term and came back each year?

Exactly. You’ve gotta show that you didn’t give up your house permanently, just rented it while you were away.

For sure appeal to a higher level at the university. You’ve got enough documents to back it up—keep pushing!

Maybe even reach out to the NYS Education Department if the university won’t budge?

I’d try contacting a state rep too. They might be able to help with the appeal.

Totally agree. Sometimes a little outside pressure can make a difference.
