So, my ex-employer from a non-profit church reached out asking me to meet with them about some bank discrepancies. I quit 9 months ago, and now they’ve hired someone new who says the books don’t match up. There was never any agreement when I left, and everything balanced back then. I don’t feel like I should be responsible for this. What do you guys think? Do I even need to meet with them?
That’s kind of annoying. Did they explain what exactly they want from you?

Not really. They just said the bank account and QuickBooks don’t match, and they have questions about it.

Sounds like they’re expecting you to solve something that isn’t even your problem anymore.
Did you sign any kind of agreement that said you’d help them after leaving?

Nope, nothing at all. No paperwork when I left.

Then you’re not legally obligated. They can’t make you meet with them.
Were the accounts in good shape when you quit?

Yeah, everything was fine. The only thing is, one of the elders told me not to reconcile for a while, and now they’re trying to fix it.

Ah, sounds like they’re trying to clean up a mess from their side and want you to explain what happened.
You shouldn’t feel pressured to meet if you’re uncomfortable. Unless they have a legal reason, it’s totally your call.

Exactly. I don’t want to go and feel like I’m being cornered.
If it was 9 months ago and everything balanced when you left, it’s not your fault they’re having issues now.

Right? It’s been so long, and now they’re suddenly bringing this up.
