I’m looking for some advice regarding my parents’ divorce decree. It stated that they both had to contribute to my college expenses up to the most expensive state university in Illinois, which is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign until I turned 23. My dad refused to pay, and my mom didn’t file a petition at the time because she was struggling financially. I decided to go to a state college instead, hoping we could settle it outside of court. Now that I’m 23, my dad’s lawyer is saying he won’t pay anything, and I feel stuck. Is there anything I can do now, or is it too late? My mom has also been diagnosed with a mental health condition that affected her ability to handle this, which complicates things even more.
Have you checked if your school has a legal aid program? They might be able to help or refer you to a low-cost agency like Land of Lincoln.
It might still be worth talking to a lawyer about your situation. Sometimes, provisions like this can have some flexibility, especially if there are extenuating circumstances.

I was hoping for that, but I’m worried about how much it might cost. Any idea on that?
@Lyle
Costs can vary, but some lawyers offer free consultations. It might be a good way to get some advice without spending a lot upfront.
I’m really sorry to hear about your situation. Have you tried reaching out to your mom’s attorney if she had one? They might have advice on how to approach this.
You might have a case for enforcing that part of the decree, especially since your mom’s condition could be relevant. Definitely worth exploring!
