I’m in South Carolina and need some advice. DSS got involved a few months before Covid, and during that time, temporary custody was given to my kids’ grandmother while I worked on getting my life together. The case is now closed, and my kids have been living with me since 2022, though they still visit their grandmother occasionally. We both agree it’s time for me to have full custody again. My question is, do we need to hire a lawyer for this, or can we just go to the courthouse to get a modification done?
If everyone agrees, I’d suggest going to your county’s self-help desk. They can help you file the paperwork to change custody.

That sounds like a good plan! It’s usually less expensive than hiring a lawyer.
I think as long as everyone is on the same page, you might be able to handle it without a lawyer. Just check the specific requirements in your county.

Yeah, it’s worth looking into. Sometimes they have forms online that you can fill out.
I’d still recommend at least consulting with a lawyer. They can provide guidance on how to present your case effectively.

True, especially if there are any complications. Better safe than sorry, right?
Make sure you have all the documents ready that show the kids have been living with you. That’ll help your case.

Good point! Evidence of stability is key, I hear.
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I feel a bit more prepared now.
