I was behind in my rent due to a surgery then I lost my job in September 2023, but I paid what I could with the help of unemployment. The landlord was going to force eviction if my spouse and I didn’t come up with a payment plan. This all started in July 2024, and since then, we’ve paid rent on time. We also paid an extra $800 a month to cover the balance. However, the landlord keeps adding late fees and charges for repairs. According to her numbers, we owe $210 and the balance should be paid off soon. But now, she’s added an extra month’s rent on top of that balance. We called and emailed explaining the miscalculations, but no response. We really need help to avoid eviction. Thanks in advance!
That sounds so stressful… have you considered looking into any tenant rights organizations in your area? They might be able to help with this.
It’s rough when landlords do that. I’d check if your lease has any clauses that let them add fees for repairs or missed payments.
If they’re still charging you despite you paying what’s owed, I’d suggest taking it to small claims court. Just make sure you have records of all your payments and communication.
Sorry to hear you’re going through this. It’s so unfair when landlords don’t play by the rules. Are you getting any support from a legal aid service?
Just a heads up—if she’s adding more rent after payments are made, that could be considered retaliatory. Have you tried documenting everything and talking to a lawyer?
