Should I expect two more checks... or just one?

So, if my payroll is like Sept 30 for the Sept 1-15 period, Oct 15 for Sept 16-30, and Oct 31 for Oct 1-15, and my last day is Oct 8… should I be getting two more checks—one on Oct 15 and another on Oct 31—or just one on Oct 15 that covers everything?

Good question! Typically, you’d still get both paychecks. The one on Oct 15 should cover Sept 16-30, and the Oct 31 one would cover Oct 1-8 since that’s your last working period.

Yeah, makes sense. Companies usually stick to their regular pay schedule even if you leave mid-period.

Exactly. Plus, some states actually require them to do it this way for final payments.

Wait, so they wouldn’t just combine it all into one check on Oct 15?

Nah, they usually don’t. Oct 15 should be for Sept 16-30, then Oct 31 would cover the last bit, Oct 1-8.

Yup, unless your company has a special rule or something, they’ll keep it separate.

I thought final wages had to be paid ASAP? Isn’t there a rule about that?

Yeah, usually states say final pay has to come by the next regular payday, so Oct 31 would still fit in the schedule.

Exactly, as long as it’s by Oct 31, they’re in the clear.

OP, were you hourly or salaried? Sometimes it changes the timing a bit.

I’m salaried, so I guess it should be pretty straightforward then?

For sure, salaried makes it simpler. Oct 15 and Oct 31 it is.

If your pay period ended Oct 8 and payday is the 15th, some places might still just pay it all on the 15th, right?

Depends on the state, but generally, they’ll stick with the normal payday cycle—so 15th and 31st.

Yeah, unless there’s a policy that says otherwise, you’re probably getting it on the 31st too.
