Should I get a lawyer for tickets like this...?

So me and my dad were heading home from our construction job, and he was driving my truck, which is under my name. The thing is, he doesn’t have a license because he’s an immigrant. Anyway, we were at an intersection, and he went on the green arrow to turn left, but the road we were turning onto was blocked by traffic. He had to stop in the middle of the road because there wasn’t anywhere else to go, and other cars had filled the turning lane we came from.

When traffic started moving again, an officer stopped us. My dad got a ticket for driving without a license and obstruction of the road. I got one too—for letting an unlicensed person drive my truck. We both have the same court date. Is this something where we should hire a lawyer, or is it better to just show up in court? Not sure what to expect.

Honestly, I’d get a lawyer, especially since both of you have tickets. You don’t want this to mess with your record.

That’s what I was thinking too. Do you know if the lawyer would handle both cases together or separately?

Depends on the lawyer, but usually they’d deal with them together since it’s related to the same situation.

Can your dad even fight this without a license? IDK how that works if he’s an immigrant.

It’s tricky, but as long as he shows up to court, they might be lenient. A lawyer could def help explain the situation better.

Makes sense. I just hope they don’t make it worse for him because of his status. Courts can be tough sometimes.

Green arrow means you had the right of way, so IDK why they gave you obstruction. That seems unfair.

Yeah, that’s what I thought too. But since the road was blocked, we couldn’t move forward. The officer wasn’t hearing it though.

If you explain it in court, they might drop or reduce the obstruction part. Definitely worth trying.

14 years ago is a long time, so I doubt they’ll care about his old ticket. This is about the current one.

Yeah, they focus on recent stuff. His record is probably clean now. Just focus on this case.

Good to know. I was worried they’d bring that up and make things worse.

If you can afford a lawyer, I’d go for it. Better safe than sorry when it comes to legal stuff.

True. I’ll start looking around for one. Thanks for the advice!
