Speeding ticket in NY... Should I fight it?

Hey all, so I live in NJ and have an NJ license. I got a speeding ticket in Keen, NY for doing 55 in a 35 zone. The ticket says I’m 20 points over the limit. From what I researched, it looks like any ticket from NY to NJ is 2 points, no matter the violation. Anyone know how much this will cost? It seems like the fine could be around $178-233, but I’m wondering if I should fight it. Also, any idea how much a lawyer would cost? I’ve heard they’re around $500 for a single ticket case. Any advice? Appreciate it!

Oof, that’s a hefty fine. I’d say if the radar clocked you, it might be tough to fight. But you could try challenging the radar calibration, not sure if it’ll work though.

Yeah, I’ve heard that’s a common defense. But unless they messed up the calibration, probably won’t help much. :roll_eyes:

@Dara
True, radar calibration is tricky. But it’s worth asking your lawyer about. Maybe there’s something they can find?

I got a similar ticket in NY last year, and it was 2 points on my NJ license too. It was about $200 for the fine, but I paid a lawyer $500 to handle it for me. It might be worth it if you’re worried about points on your record.

@Oakley
Ah, good to know it’s the same for NJ. Guess I’ll have to weigh the cost of the lawyer against the ticket fine. Thanks!

In my experience, if you go for a plea bargain in NJ, you usually end up paying some fine, even if you get a reduced sentence. But 2 points isn’t too bad, at least it’s not like a 4-point violation.

Yeah, 2 points isn’t as bad, but still annoying to deal with. I’d probably just pay the fine and move on unless there’s a good reason to fight it.

I’ve dealt with the same thing. If the ticket’s dismissed, you don’t pay it, but if you fight it and lose, expect to pay the fine plus the lawyer fee. Not sure if it’s worth fighting over $200 unless you’re really concerned about the points.

@Jagger
Makes sense, thanks for the insight! I might just pay it and avoid the hassle of fighting it. Appreciate all the help!

www.avvo.com is a great place to find a traffic lawyer. They have reviews and ratings, so you can see which ones might be good for your case. Just make sure to check their experience with speeding tickets.

@Sloan
Thanks, I’ll check it out. Appreciate the suggestion!
