Thinking about raising an issue with my son’s school... anyone done this before?

I’m considering raising a complaint to the media about the conditions of the bathrooms at my son’s school. The bathrooms are really in bad shape, and I’m hoping that media attention might help push the school to fix them. I thought of taking some photos of the empty bathrooms to show the condition. Anyone know if this could cause any issues?

I had a similar experience with my kid’s school. I took photos, but I did ask the school first. They were surprisingly open about it.

Good idea! I was thinking of just snapping them, but asking permission first could avoid any trouble. Did the media help in your case?

It helped a bit! The school eventually got funds to repair the issues. Just be polite when asking—some schools are really sensitive about any outside attention.

I’d check the school policies or maybe NJ state rules about taking pics on school grounds. Don’t want to get into trouble!

Yeah, that’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of state laws… NJ here.

Then you’re good as long as no one is in the photo, especially kids. Schools usually care more if people are visible.

IDK, maybe make sketches or renderings instead of real photos? Some schools would be less likely to object to that.

That’s actually smart! Might still get the point across without stepping on any toes.

Exactly, and it still shows the state of things without actual photos. Worth a shot!

If you have access to the school (like during pickup), it should be fine as long as no kids are around. Media attention can definitely push things along.

I’m usually there at pickup, so I could go in during that time when it’s empty. Glad to know media has worked for others!

FYI, just keep the tone friendly when you approach the media. Schools can get defensive.

Maybe even talk to the school first? Some schools might be open to fixing things if they know parents are unhappy.

True, I’ll try talking to them directly before going to the media. Hopefully they’ll listen!

Yeah, sometimes a polite ask goes a long way. Good luck!
