What are my rights in an HR investigation... anyone know?

Going through an HR investigation in Illinois, and I’m trying to get a handle on my rights here. They told me what it’s about, but I’m not sure what I can do to protect myself. Any tips?

You’re allowed to know the basics of the investigation. HR should give you some details, even if it’s just a general idea of what’s up.

Really? They only said I’m being investigated but didn’t give details. Should I push for more info?

I think it’s worth asking! From what I gather, they should let you know the main issue so you’re not in the dark.

Definitely document everything. Every conversation with HR, any messages, all of it. Could be super helpful later.

Absolutely! Keeping track of everything is smart. Just jot down anything important.

And remember, they can’t retaliate against you just for being investigated. If they do anything shady, that’s not allowed.

Good to know! I was worried this might come back to bite me. So if I notice any changes in how they treat me, I can report it?

Yep, you can go to HR or even an outside agency. Just make sure to have everything on record.

You can ask to have someone with you for support during meetings too, like a colleague or representative.

Will HR actually let you do that?

Depends on the company, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. They might allow it.

FYI, Illinois law gives you a right to present your side and bring up any supporting info. So don’t hesitate to share your perspective.

Thanks! I’ll make sure to be prepared. Didn’t know I could bring my own evidence.
