I’m trying to figure out what the normal costs are for hiring a lawyer in California. I’m not looking for anything too complicated since my divorce was pretty straightforward. We have one kid who lives with his mom, and we worked out child support and visitation ourselves, but now she’s saying it should be more official. I’ve paid for almost all the travel to see him, and honestly, money’s tight. I just want to make sure I do this right and get a clear visitation schedule. Any advice would help!
So I’m based in California too! From what I’ve seen, standard retainers can range from around $2,500 to $20,000, depending on how complex the case is. For simpler stuff, like what you described, maybe $3,000 to $5,000 would be a good estimate. And hourly rates can go from $260 up to over $1,000 in fancy areas! Just a heads up though, any unused retainer fees are usually refundable.
That’s super helpful, DEF! But why isn’t your arrangement official yet? You can actually file a support order and visitation schedule on your own without needing a lawyer.

IDK, we just haven’t gotten around to it. I thought getting it official would be better, but maybe we can just do it ourselves.
Good to know about the retainers and rates. Also, what’s your income compared to hers? That can really affect the child support calculations.

I think mine is higher, but her situation is complicated. I only see him about 10% of the time and want more… like 25%.
Have you used the California child support calculator? It might help you understand your obligations better.

Yeah, I did! But I’m confused about the difference between ‘Monthly’ and ‘Basic’ support amounts. Is the monthly one adjusted for other expenses?
@BrianMorris
The ‘Monthly’ amount usually factors in other costs like travel, I think. Definitely worth double-checking.
Sounds like you’re doing your best, man. Getting it all sorted can be a pain, but it’ll be worth it in the long run!
