Hey everyone! I was driving in New York and came across a school bus that was parked, but as I got close, the stop sign suddenly popped up and the red lights started flashing. I was driving too fast to stop and just passed it. Am I supposed to stop even if I’m already next to the bus? Anyone know the rules about this?
Yeah, in New York, you’re supposed to stop no matter what when the stop sign is out and the lights are flashing. Even if you’re next to the bus, you have to stop right away.

Wait, even if you’re already past the bus?? That seems a bit extreme. What if you’re too close to stop in time?
@Skylar
Yeah, I get it. It feels like you’re in a tough spot, but legally, you should stop. You can argue that you didn’t have time if you get a ticket, though.
Sounds like a tough situation. I’ve been in that position before and it’s kind of a gray area. If you’re already near the bus, I think it should be up to a judge to decide if you were really able to stop in time.
@ElijahMiller4
Yeah, that makes sense. If they’re giving you a ticket, it might be worth contesting it, especially if you couldn’t stop in time.
How strict are they with fines for this? Anyone know the typical fees for passing a school bus like this?

It really depends on the county. But in general, the fines can be pretty steep. You might want to contact your local clerk of court to get more details.
From what I know, even if you’re right next to the bus, you’re still supposed to stop completely. I know it sounds confusing, but it’s to keep kids safe.

I get the safety part, just feels weird to stop right next to the bus. Guess that’s the law though.
Thanks everyone for the feedback! I’ll try to contact the court and see what the next steps are if I end up getting a ticket.
